Puerto Rico needs new entrepreneurs due to the damage hurricane Maria left
Due to the storm that had happened back in 2017 by
hurricane Maria firms are still trying to get back on track but does this mean
they are finding people to fund them?
For Puerto Rico-based entrepreneurs, whether they were locals or recent transplants who had set up shop in the island, the worst storm in a century proved to be the ultimate test in keeping and growing a business despite unimaginable setbacks
The island has improved since then but it is still
trying to get back to how it was and this will take a lot of time and
resources. The challenges start-ups have faced are huge as all the systems
were cut down and they could not even use their systems. An accelerator program Parallel18 helped a lot in this as they had
fiber internet and let entrepreneurs use their office. Tasks were mainly on
survival how and where to get food, water etc. One has to be reminded that
after the hurricane no resources were left, everything was taken away.
Parallel18 is a global accelerator based in Puerto Rico where their goal is to
create a new generation of local entrepreneurs that have a much bigger and brighter
vision for the future. They helped in the survival of some companies and were
there as support throughout the whole crisis. Now they are still going to help start-ups
despite the fact that another hurricane might happen – only this time they will
be more prepared for it all. Funding is not the only thing that can help
entrepreneurs in Puerto Rico but even validation, support and help in
rebuilding the company. Despite the tough economic situation, the executive
director of the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company believes that the
opportunities outweigh the obstacles.
